Thursday 14th January - Garlic, onions and shallots

Photo of the day
I pulled the garlic up today, a bit past when it should have been pulled, traditionally onions and garlic etc are planted on the shortest day and harvested on the longest. The longest day has past but when Joe checked the garlic it wasn't very big so he left it. I decided to pull it today as the bed they were in can be used for something else. So as these are the first garlic we have grown successfully, I think they warrant being todays Photo of the Day. There are 24 garlic in the picture. I still have plenty more to trim in the wheelbarrow in the garage. They are different varieties, I will show you them when they're done.

Onions
Just after Christmas Joe lifted the onions and left them to dry out, then when it threatened rain brought them into the workshop to continue to dry. I strung them up last week and now they are hanging on the shelves. I think they are the best onions we have ever grown, we'll make sure we plant more next time.

  2. We planted the garlic in a crappy bit of earth, not in one of the raised beds, no manure etc. they were a bit slow but they seemed to come away over the last few weeks. Joe just made sure he watered them as it was getting quite dry.

  6. Aww Nikki, bless ya! :D Do what you can, when you can. Google 'Square foot gardening(Mel Bartholomew)I reckon using some of his ideas would work well for you. Raised beds work very well and are a lot less work.
