It seemed a long time in coming but finally Joe has made some progress, the veggie garden is here! He wouldn't even consider starting one until he had the chooks contained. Now with the chook runderdome doing it's thing it was all systems go.
we decide we would try out Mel Bartholomews square foot gardening techniques, http://www.squarefootgardening.com/ anything that requires mimimum effort is always a bonus.
Joe found some off cuts of wood at a recycling centre, a whole pallet load for $20, which has made all of the raised beds so far, plus a small chick rearing hutch and still there is loads to spare, so quite a bargain, especially when you think how much wood is to buy. We already had heaps of other types of wood here to re-use so that kept costs down too. All we had to buy was a big bucket of wood colour, which was on special and nails.
The raised beds differ in sizes depending on the crop.
As the plants grew, the beds evolved with added supports.
The Trade Me purchase that built the runderdome came in handy again, a very useful frame work for a shade covering and for pumpkin support.
We look forward to eating our own home grown veggies, we are already enjoying some wonderful Jersey Benny new potatoes, there is no flavour like it, freshly dug spuds...yummy!
